Public Art Around the World Exhibition Launches In Sandton Central Featured

An exhibition showcasing public art around the world recently launched at Burgher's Walk, Sandton Central as part of the Sandton Central Management District's (SCMD) Outdoor Exhibition Programme. Curated by AAW Art Project Management, the exhibition puts the spotlight on all disciplines of the arts in public space, from permormative and temporary installations to landmark city sculptures.
Featuring many countries around the world, including interesting works in Sandton Central, around South Africa, Africa, Europe, South America and the USA, the exhibition debunks conventional notions of public art.
"This is one of the most exciting Outdoor Exhibition that the SCMD has brought to the streets of Sandton Central this year, and it's fascinating to see how our Art Programme compares to other local and international art installations. Certainly, from where we sit, they hold more than their own amongst some of the best works in the world and we believe that our Art Programme is well on its way in creating a platform for South African artists to push the boundaries," says Paul van Rooyen, City Improvement District Manager for the SCMD.
The launch function, held on 24 November, included a site-specific performance titled Erosion by Johannesburg based artist, Marcus Neustetter. Well known for his process driven works, Neustetter's production of art is experimental in its approach with works ranging from conventional drawing to permanent and temporary site-specific installations, mobile and virtual interventions and socially engage projects internationally.
Within the international context the show features works by the world-renowned Anish Kapoor in Chicago and the anonymous JR, whose Women are Heroes projects expands across the globe from Liberia to Paris and Santa Fe. Brazilian artist Néle Azevado's compelling 'melting' works responds to the idea of permanent monumentalism in the contemporary world is also a highlight in the exhibition, as is Royal de Luxe's breathtaking Sultan's Elephant .
Sandton Central and South African works are a definite highlight of the show, with a special focus on performative and temporary installations. Amongst them are works managed by AAW Art Project Management in the Western Cape, KwaZulu Natal, inner city Joburg and in Sandton Central alongside Trinity Session's South African and African work in Dakar, Soweto, Pretoria and more, as well as performative highlights from Cape Town's Infecting the City project curated by Brett Bailey.
"We are also delighted to show many works that are about and by women," says Lesley Perkes, from AAW. "Public art has traditionally been the domain of the male sculptor, and although the show features the beautiful bronze of Ma Brrr in Newtown by Angus Taylor, many of the other South African works are by and about women. This demonstrates that the multi-disciplinary approach and new media ideas have changed the landscape in the art sector." Usha Seejarim's Why Men in Sandton Central, Mary Sibande's Long Live The Dead Queen exhibition as part of Jhb Art City's World Premiere, the Tribute to Bessie Head by Jane du Rand in Durban are some of the works in this theme.
"For the last five years, Sandton Central has worked with the arts as an imaginative way to recreate public open space, realising international best practice in place making through the world of dreams, poetry, visual ideas and works ranging from music and dance to conceptual commissions and utilitarian sculptural benches. This show is a culmination of that work and we are proud to be its host and urge people to come to our district to see it," van Rooyen concludes.
