SCMD nominated for BASA
Guitarist Steve Newman is one of many artists who performed at the highly successful open Street Sessions in Sandton.
The SCMDs annual Art Programme, developed in collaboration with Art At Work (AAW) Art Project Management, is now in its fifth year and has been nominated in the Increasing Access to the Arts BASA Category.
"Together with AAW, a variety of public arts-based projects - ranging from outdoor exhibitions, street performances and bespoke seating structures ¬- have been conceived, planned and implemented," says Paul van Rooyen, CID manager of the SCMD. "The focus of the Art Programme has always been on revitalising Sandton Central through art in public spaces and creating an exceptional district in the process,"
While the entire programme is focused on the arts, two main projects have been exceptionally successful – the Open Street Sessions (OSS) and the Exhibition Programme.
OSS sees a variety of live street performances, ranging from mime to dance to music, transform the streets of Sandton Central into a lively and unique stage. The Exhibition Programme converts the district into a gallery by using specially designed, portable exhibition stands to display the works of critically acclaimed photographers and artists.
"The Art Programme, and particularly these two projects, exposes visitors, residents and tourists to artists and art forms in a truly unique fashion. The success of our initiatives is reflected in how audiences interact with the performances. We've had pedestrians actually participating in the OSS, dancing and singing along with the artists.
"During the World Cup tourists were absolutely delighted with the public performances and exhibitions. Through the years, our art programme has grown from strength to strength, and the SCMD would like to give special thanks to AAW for their continued commitment and dedication. To be nominated for a third BASA Award is an enormous honour, and we'll be anxiously awaiting the results," van Rooyen concludes.
